Summary

  • Restoring over one mile of the West Fork of the White River by reconstructing an unstable, over-widened stream channel into a stable, naturally functioning waterway.
  • Stabilizing streambanks and enhancing aquatic habitat with toe-wood structures, stacked rock walls, J-hooks, cross veins, grade control structures, and constructed riffles.
  • Excavating approximately 35,000 cubic yards of material and installing more than 2,500 linear feet of streambank protection to improve long-term channel stability and ecological function.
Project Description

Restored over a mile of the West Fork of the White River (WFWR) which was the #1 highest sediment-producing streambank on the WFWR.  The restoration included re-establishing channel stability by defining a stable stream channel through an over-widened and highly unstable reach. In addition to excavating a new channel, toe-wood structures were used along the meander bends to protect the newly constructed banks and increase habitat.  Various types of in-channel rock structures including J-hooks, cross veins and grade control structures were used to help hold the channel form and create more stream habitat diversity.

This project was constructed by 2 different stream restoration firms: Streamline Environmental and Flow State LLC.  Flow State LLC constructed approximately half of the project including 1500 linear feet of toe-wood, 1000 feet of stacked rock wall, several constructed riffles, j-hooks, and cross veins as well as excavating 35,000 cu yards of material.
